Flaunting the age-old art form of “Pattachitra”, this shawl/dupatta is the epitome of Indian culture. Pattachitra style of painting is one of the oldest (almost 1000 years) and most popular art forms of West Bengal and Odisha. The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words ‘patta’, meaning canvas, and ‘chitra’, meaning picture. The cloth is a canvas wherein the artists make scenes inspired by nature and Hindu mythology. The artistry is immaculate and colorful. The variations we have made are based on the colors of the border of the cloth.
This shawl/dupatta has been created by Soumya, an independent artist from Pingla, a small village in the Eastern India state of West Bengal. His entire village is dedicated to conserving and keeping this art form alive, which has been facing stiff competition from mass produced products. The recent COVID-19 pandemic also has severely impacted the livelihood of this village.
The base material of the shawl is Khadi silk – 50% khadi and 50% silk, which is beige in color with different border colors. This fabric is characterized by its sheen and luxurious appearance. The artisans have used fabric paint to make motifs and figurines, unique to this art form. Users may sometimes notice variation or inconsistency in weaving, design, or color combination. These are due to the handcrafted nature of the garment and are not defects, but features, which makes each piece unique.
Fabric Care:
The first wash should be at the laundry. This will keep the clothes from shrinking and hold the colors. Post that washes it with delicates.
